“Unmasking Growth: Lessons from ‘Wicked’ to Ignite Your New Year
As the year ends, I reflect on my growth and development. Recently, I accepted a journal prompt to consider what book, movie, or art influenced me this year. Fresh in my mind is the movie “Wicked,” which I immensely enjoyed!
The movie starts with the celebration of the Wicked Witch’s death. As a child, watching “The Wizard of Oz” gave me goosebumps when the Wicked Witch appeared—she was mean and scary. Naturally, I cheered when she died at the end.
“Wicked” teaches a valuable lesson about the nuance of good and evil. For decades, fans believed the witch was inherently evil. The backstory reminds us that things are not always as they appear. I never considered why the witch seemed wicked beyond her green skin and desire for revenge for her sister’s death.
Without giving away too much—especially since “Wicked Part Two” will release on my daughter’s birthday next year—we develop empathy for the Wicked Witch and question her infamy.
Too often, we judge things at face value. It’s important to keep an open mind and reserve judgment because new or hidden information can offer better perspectives.
I relate to the character Elphaba. My mixed racial background and the era of my birth led to marginalization and pity, causing me to build a hard shell and high wall for protection. Recent years have seen me deconstructing that wall, inviting people to see my heart.
Where I once believed no one cared about my opinion, I now give more compliments.
Where I thought I had little knowledge, I encourage others.
Instead of hiding in the back of room trying to not draw attention away from others, I aim to shine with warmth and compassion.
A neighbor once called me stand-offish, a label I didn’t like. I’d much rather be the friendly, inviting neighbor, letting my light shine.
I’m looking forward to the second “Wicked” movie to see more behind the curtain, understanding how a lack of transparency can be harmful.
Reflecting on my journey and “Wicked’s” lessons, I’ve learned that understanding and empathy transform perspectives. As we move into the new year, keep an open heart and mind, look beyond first impressions, and embrace growth and transformation.

Let us strive to see the world with more depth and understanding, allowing our light to shine brightly in the coming year.
